Preventive measures in operating electric DC motors

One,

Silicon-contained material and compound are apt to be absorbed onto the commutators, brushes and other parts of DC motors. Under the influences of electrical energy in the DC motor configuration, they will be decomposed into SiO2, SiC and the like byproducts. Such substances radically increase the contact resistances between the commutators and brushes. Therefore, when the DC motors are used together with silicon-contained materials or compounds, we should pay special attention to the invisible damages brought to the DC motors. Especially, when silicon-contained viscose and sealing materials are adopted and the DC motors are assembled into targeted parts or products, please make sure that there will be no volatile aerial fogs during operations and hardening process, which jeopardize the characteristics and lifespan of the DC motors. When adopting cyanide and sulfide viscose, special attention also should be taken to prevent the DC motors from any invisible damages.

Two,

When assembling your parts and products, please make sure that any viscose should be prevented from touching the bearing of the DC motors or flowing into the motor configuration.

Three,

The axial press-in thrust can exert huge negative influence on the lifespan of the DC motors, esp. the axial thrusts generated by worm gears, blades and etc. In case that axial thrust is expectable, the lifespan data of the DC motors should be acquired from examinations done under actual operating conditions while the DC motors have been assembled into the parts or products. When axial thrust is excessively huge, mechanical system should be adopted to fasten the shaft.

Four,

Under some circumstances, the internal resistance of the power supply driving the DC motors also influences the lifespan of the DC motors. When it is low-voltage power source driving the DC motors, oversized internal resistance prevents the DC motors from achieving presumptive performance and characteristics. Conversely, when it is high-voltage power source driving the DC motors, or, driving voltages need to be switched over often, undersized internal resistance shortens the DC motors’ lifespan. When ambient temperature differs from general standard room temperature, esp. when the ambient temperature is over-high or over-low, please pay special attention to the variations in the power sources and respective internal resistances.

Five,

When considerable radial acting force is applied, for instance, when eccentric wheel is mounted or there are considerable vibrations in operating circumstances, severe negative influences on the DC motors’ lifespan will be resulted. Under such circumstances, lifespan data of the DC motors should be refined from operations under actual operating conditions.

Six,

When the DC motors are assembled into target parts or products, if the adopted equipment and mechanism generate ultrasonic sounds, please be especially aware that the generated ultrasonic sounds may result in damages to the DC motors’ components.

Seven,

Please don’t store the DC motors in high-temperature or high-humidity environments. Please don’t store the DC motors in an environment wherein corrosive gas exists. Components of the DC motors are apt to be disabled in such environments. Therefore, malfunctions may occur.

Don’t let magnetized or magnetic objects be placed near the electric motor or contact with the body of the electric motor. Otherwise, the performance of the electric motor will be negatively influenced.

Eight,

Surrounding environment and operating temperature influence the characteristics and lifespan of the DC motors to some extent. Please pay special attention to contingent high-temperature or high-humidity in the environments when the DC motors are used wherein.

Please pay attention to the operating environment. Especially, if iron powder is absorbed into the motor contour, excessive noise occurs. And the lifespan of the electric motor will be negatively influenced.

Nine,

When worms, gears and the like parts are mounted to the shafts of the DC motors, please be sure to support the other ends of the shafts or end caps and their embossments correctly and appropriately.

Ten,

When the DC motors are being assembled into target products and soldering is in process, please be sure to cover the through holes on the motor body indirectly, preventing soldering debris, soldering flux, soldering smoke and etc from entering into the motor body. Especially, when soldering the connecting wires or terminals, the soldering process should be done in as quickly as possible. Otherwise, deformations in wire materials and the plastic surrounding the terminals will occur. Other preventive measures also should be consummated to the greatest extent so as to ensure the DC motors from damages. Please be sure to get rid of the remnant soldering flux on the connecting wires and terminals. Otherwise, abnormalities or damages would occur when the DC motors are powered.

When mounting the electric motor, please try not to let anything cling to the motor body or the motor body be wrapped up. Necessary gaps should be kept for heat dissipation.

The vent holes or through holes on the motor body should not be used to fasten the electric motor. Otherwise, the performance will be negatively influenced. Furthermore, without our consent, any of the holes should not be blocked.

Eleven,

When the DC motors are powered, please be aware that the shafts should be protected from deadlocks in no circumstances. If the shaft is locked herein, ultra-high temperature occurs. And the generated heat will damage the DC motors. Likewise, the heat buildup leads surrounding inflammables to a calamity possibly.

No matter what type of power supply will be connected to the electric motor’s terminals, please avoid applying excessive force or over-high temperature. Otherwise, transformations to the inner components will be resulted in.

When soldering the terminals, keep the temperature of soldering tin to be < 350 and soldering time to be <= 1 second.

Particularly, small-sized and high-power electric motors are subject to fast temperature rises. Please try not to apply over-high voltage. Please avoid the running at stall or long-time running at approximate stall status.

Twelve,    Additional explanations:

There will be slight electrical noise generated by the contact between the commutator and brushes. As magnets are contained inside, the surface of the electric motor is magnetic. Existences of a few spots on the surface or edges of electric motor are allowable.
